HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – Hobby Lobby could be returning to central southwest Houston with a new store in Meyerland Plaza, just a few years after vacating a nearby space across Loop 610.
The crafting and home decor products company filed plans to renovate 69,134 SF in the shopping center on Beechnut at Loop 610, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The space was previously occupied by Palais Royal, which closed in 2020.
The renovation project has an estimated start date of August 2026 and completion date of March 2027, according to TDLR. The cost is estimated at $3.5 million.
Hobby Lobby closed its nearby location inside Loop 610 at Beechnut near Lowe’s Home Improvement a few years ago. Academy Sports + Outdoors took over that space in 2022.
Meyerland Plaza, a retail property of Fidelis Realty Partners in southwest Houston’s Meyerland neighborhood, opened in 1957. It was redeveloped as an open air center by veteran retail broker Ed Wulfe in the 1990s and further expanded by Fidelis in 2020 with a two-story H-E-B grocery store.
Meyerland Plaza has brought in many new tenants to fill vacancies over the years. Dick’s Sporting Goods took over the former Bed, Bath & Beyond anchor space in 2022. Nordstrom Rack opened in the former Best Buy last year. A deal is in the works for the spot vacated by Joann Fabrics, which closed in May as part of a national shutdown. Joann Fabrics took over the former Stein Mart store in 2022.
Elsewhere, Fidelis Realty Partners welcomed Hobby Lobby to another Houston area shopping center this summer. Hobby Lobby opened a 55,000-SF store in Mont Belvieu Crossing near Interstate 10 and The Grand Parkway in July.
Based in Oklahoma City, privately owned Hobby Lobby has more than 1,000 stores across the U.S, including 120 in Texas. The merchandise mix includes floral, fabric, needle art, custom framing, baskets, home accents, kitchen, bath, wearable art, arts and crafts, jewelry making, scrapbooking, party, and paper crafting supplies.
